There are plenty of free castle around England and wales that can be explored for free.
One great one is Maiden Castle near Dorchester in Dorset is an enormous Iron Age hill fort with ditches and ramparts galore. If you take the steep(ish) climb to the top, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views.

Access: The ramparts are uneven and not suitable for wheelchairs.
Parking: There is a small car park at the fort which can become busy at peak times.
Dogs: Dogs are welcome, but please keep them on a lead as sheep graze the site.
