There are many free access stately homes or at least you can explore around the grounds and marvel at the outside architecture (this avoids the potential of breakage).
One of our favourites is Lydiard Park estate in West Swindon (just off junction 16 M4).
Other recommendations include Newarke Houses Museum in Leicester which are two stately houses where you can explore toys from Tudor times to present day, a play area and a recreation of a First World War trench. Open daily 10am-5pm. Find out more at leicester.gov.uk .
