The Hippodrome Bristol

The Bristol Hippodrome Theatre is in the center of Bristol and easily accessible to the train station, M5 and M4 motorways. It has numerous productions ranging from musicals, ballet, opera, concerts, comedians or children’s shows. It is a beautiful building but despite its age it has great accessibility and supports families and individuals with additional needs to a very high standard.

A friend who often takes school trips to the Hippodrome said how accommodating and supportive they are towards children with SEND. She recently took a group of pupils and one was suffering from anxiety, and the staff were brilliant and found a quiet space for the individual, which in turn enabled them to finish watching the performance.

The accessibility is very good including:

Facilities for Hearing Impaired Visitors
Facilities for Visually Impaired Visitors
Guide Dogs Permitted – Assistance dogs permitted
Ramp/Level Access
Toilets for Disabled Visitors.

Another great idea is having an available visual story of the visit to the theatre which definitely helps to prepare individuals prior to arrival. If you would like a copy you can email [email protected] for a copy of the visual story. It is designed to assist those who are on the autistic spectrum or who have a sensory or communication condition, but we think any individual that benefits from a little bit of preparation would find this helpful.

They also have an “access membership scheme” which is designed to make it easier for customers to book accessible seats, and it helps staff be aware of requirements of individuals. It is a free service so have a look at the direct link above.

Finally, we are so pleased that the Hippodrome are embracing “relaxed performances” including the seasonal Pantomine and other productions. In September 2019 when The Lion King is touring, they will have a “relaxed performance” which is really exciting. Once the dates have been released we will let you know.
